The Expendables – Movie Review

The Expendables is an action flick on steroids sure to please those who crave gratuitous violence.  This movie should not be on the top of your list of date ideas — testosterone is a prerequisite to enjoyment of this ode to glorious mayhem and destruction.  It can be accurately said that this movie is the exact antithesis of Sex And The City.  The Expendables features a cast of well known action heroes led by Sylvester Stallone who produce a body count viewers are hard pressed to tally.  This film was made for true aficionados of gore.

Although the plot of the movie is somewhat generic, its timeless theme is universal.  Stallone performs well in the lead, but it could accurately be said that any of the supporting actors could have seamlessly swapped places with Sly, which is a testament to the depth of talent appearing in this movie.  Stallone plays the character of Barney Ross — leader of a gang of bikers (The Expendables)  who act more like mercenaries.  The group isn’t driven by ideology — they’ll take any job if the money is right.  Mickey Rourke plays the memorable role of an ex-gang member who now owns a tattoo parlor — which also happens to be a popular hang out for the Expendables when they’re not busy killing large swaths of humanity.

Other gang members include Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li who assemble under Stallone’s command to depose an evil dictator (played by David Zayas) who is actually just a puppet of a CIA operative (played by Eric Roberts).  This mission proves to be the gang’s toughest to date.  The action is intense, and the plot allows for development of each of characters played by the list of iconic action heroes which comprise the cast.  Several cameo appearances are sprinkled throughout the movie, one of which is sure to live in action flick lore.

If you’re looking for an uplifting or spiritual film — this isn’t your movie.  However, if you want to immerse yourself in the bloody and sordid world of hardcore mercenaries, the The Expendables should be at the top of your list.
